A Weekend of Art, Flowers, and Festivities at SDMA
The San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) is gearing up for its most awaited event of the year: Art Alive 2024. This year's celebration is scheduled from Friday, April 26th to Sunday, April 28th, and has something for everyone. This year’s festivities occur in the height of spring blooms, promising to be more captivating than ever, filled with floral interpretations of art, a dazzling rotunda design, and an unforgettable Bloom Bash. Art Alive brings a kaleidoscope of colorful floral arrangements interpreting works of art from the Museum collection, four days of fun-filled events, large-scale art and flower installations, and a garden of activities for families and artists of all ages. Art Alive 2024 celebrates the art of India and will feature a special installation from the Museum’s renowned Edwin Binney 3rd Collection of Indian paintings.
Floral Interpretations: A Tribute to Art
Art Alive brings together local volunteers, many from the floral industry, to create breathtaking interpretations of selected artwork from the SDMA collection. These floral artists use their creativity and expertise to create a floral version or interpretation of the art piece selected, creating unusual and engaging floral displays. It's a unique and beautiful homage to the museum's diverse collection and offers guests a fresh perspective on each piece from the artist’s eye.
The Rotunda Designer: A Spotlight on Talent
One of the big attractions at Art Alive is the floral installation designed and installed in the Rotunda of the museum by a prominent visual artist or floral artist. Each year, the space is reimagined with flowers at the heart of the design, turning the museum’s central entrance and grand stairway into a floral masterpiece. Art Alive's 2024 rotunda designer is Meghaa Modi, India’s premier concept and event designer. She’s the founder, CEO, and principal designer at Meghaa Modi Design Studio. At the core of Meghaa’s work lies a strong commitment to eco-friendly and sustainable designs, reflecting her deep respect and understanding of nature, honed through her intensive master studies in Ikebana. The Rotunda Design is an honor bestowed upon the most innovative minds in floral design. Green’s creative director and owner, Carlos Franco, has been honored to design the Rotunda installation for Art Alive three times.
Thursday Night Premier Dinner: A First Look
Kicking off the weekend of events is the beloved annual Art Alive Premiere Dinner, an elegant black-tie affair, celebrating art with a spectacular dinner in the Museum galleries among a special installation of South Asian paintings from the Edwin Binney 3rd Collection. This event offers a first look at the incredible floral designs of Art Alive and a delicious multi-course menu of delectable delicacies and extraordinary entrees, a full bar, and decadent desserts. Enjoy a glamorous evening of enchantment.
Bloom Bash: A Night of Art, Music, and Fun
On Friday night is the eagerly anticipated Bloom Bash, an exhilarating celebration of art, food, music, and fun. This event is the perfect blend of culture and party, featuring unique installations, delectable cuisine from San Diego's top eateries, and vibrant musical performances. Bloom Bash is not just an event; it's a sensory experience that encapsulates the spirit of San Diego's rich cultural tapestry.
The Green Pop-Up Booth Takes A Pause
During past Art Alive Weekends, Green hosted a Pop-Up Booth in front of SDMA. This year, we cannot do the booth due to space constraints in front of the museum. We hope to be back at our regular location next year.
